Physician Leadership
Physicians often find themselves in positions of leadership – within their practices, their health systems, their communities, and the larger health arena. While medical school has prepared them to successfully overcome a wide variety of clinical challenges, it is unlikely to have supplied the basic principles and practices of effective leadership. In 2006, the MSV Foundation (MSVF) established a physician leadership initiative to address this need. Currently, MSVF offers two unique programs to offer state-specific physician leadership development training to the Commonwealth’s physicians. The Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute is a yearlong continuing education experience and requires each participant’s commitment to actively contribute, both receiving and producing content on physician leadership. The goal of the Institute is to produce a network of physician leaders who work individually and together to effectively advance health and health care in Virginia.
MSVF’s customized Physician Leadership Development series offers health systems and other interested organizations an opportunity to provide their physicians with organization-specific leadership training. The program is designed to provide practical training and resources to assist physicians in their daily environments, both in their practice and within their larger organization or community. The goal of this training is not to duplicate the content of the Institute but rather to provide a leadership primer for physicians, providing basic techniques and tools to use in their careers. MSVF’s leadership training offers Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit hours through the Office of Continuing Professional Development and Evaluation Studies at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.
