Informational Summary
What is the Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute?
The Institute is a participatory continuing education experience that provides a trusted source of leadership development to up and coming leaders within Virginia’s physician community. The goal is to produce a network of physician leaders who work individually and together to effectively advance health and health care in Virginia.
Why is the Institute relevant?
Physicians often find themselves in positions of leadership – within their practices, their health systems, their communities, and the larger health arena. While medical school has prepared them to successfully overcome a wide variety of clinical challenges, it is unlikely to have supplied the basic principles and practices of effective leadership. The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation (MSVF) established the Institute in 2006, one of only a handful in the nation that is devoted to providing physicians with formal, ongoing leadership training.
When is the Institute held?
The Institute operates over twelve months, and monthly learning experiences are provided through varied approaches. Live sessions are held in Richmond and begin with a two-day opening session in September with core leadership topics; and one-day sessions in January focusing on Virginia’s General Assembly; in May focusing on physician leadership, action planning, and MSV’s legislative agenda, and in the following September a closing session with additional leadership core content. In the intervening months, assigned readings, web-based activities, and specialized leadership training opportunities round out the Institute experience.
What topics are taught at the Institute?
The Institute offers practical leadership training and experiences which make the most of national, state, and local experts and opportunities to guide participants through focused learning efforts. Topics covered fit into three general areas - executive management, health systems improvement, and public policy. This activity has been approved for AMA PRA credit.
How much does the Institute cost?
In 2010-11, the tuition fee, payable upon acceptance to the program is $1,000. Limited tuition assistance based on financial need is available. Applicant must be a member in good standing of MSV.
How is the Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute funded?
The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation (MSVF) received a five-year grant of $467,000 from the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation to establish the Institute. HCA Virginia and the Herndon Foundation are Presidential Sponsors of the Institute, providing multi-year annual funding of $15,000 each. MSVF is seeking additional funders to support the important work of the Institute.
