MSV Foundation

History

Established in 1986 as a nonprofit subsidiary of the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV), the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation is a charitable partnership between the MSV and the MSV Alliance. Our aim is to leverage the resources of the medical community to create a healthier Virginia.

Originally created to promote medicine through charitable, scientific and educational purposes, the MSV Foundation’s primary activity in its early years was to provide low-cost loans and scholarships to medical students.

In the mid-1990s, it expanded these activities to include supporting physicians willing to locate in medically underserved areas and sponsoring educational and research programs. Throughout the nineties, the MSV Foundation quietly worked behind the scenes to achieve its mission through these areas.

In 1999, the Foundation's parent organization, the Medical Society of Virginia, underwent a comprehensive reevaluation of its mission and goals and developed a long-term strategic plan. Along with increased legislative and practice advocacy for physicians, it renewed its commitment to promoting improved health and disease prevention for all Virginians.

This new focus was ideally suited for the MSV Foundation, prompting its leadership to embark on a strategic planning process to redirect the Foundation’s vision and rejuvenate its activities. As a result, the MSV Foundation adopted a new mission and vision that were launched in September 2000.

Since the Fall of 2000, the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation has made great strides in achieving its vision of improving the health status of all Virginians. With the leadership of a dynamic Board of Directors that combines the assets of the physician, alliance, medical student, and corporate communities, the MSV Foundation has developed programs and initiatives that make a real difference in the health of our communities.
