Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute expands its reach
3 November 2008
The MSV Foundation's second class of Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute fellow's finished their coursework and graduated from the program on Sept. 10, 2008. The following day, the newly inducted third class of fellows began the 2008-09 program during the opening session on Sept. 11-12, 2008. The group of 20 physicians began their year-long leadership development with a two-day substance-filled agenda which included Chic Thompson, a nationally-recognized speaker on
Creative Problem Solving Skills for Leadership, and Delegate Phil Hamilton, who participated in a panel discussion on
Understanding and Influencing the Public Policy Process. The Institute is a participatory continuing education experience and is one of only a handful in the nation that is devoted to providing physicians with formal, ongoing leadership training. Applications for the 2009-10 Institute will be available in spring 2009.
In addition to the Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute, the MSV Foundation has begun offering an on-site, customized physician leadership development program to interested groups. Riverside Medical Group recently offered a two-day program to its physicians through Saturday workshops in May and September 2008 at the Riverside Health System Corporate Office in Newport News. 22 physicians and two nurse practitioners attended sessions selected by Riverside, with topics including
Effective People Skills,
Marketing and Media 101,
State and National Healthcare Policy Trends,
Health System Financials and
Organizational Change Management.
This customized program does not duplicate the content of the Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute. Rather this program is intended to be a primer for physicians on leadership skills, providing practical techniques and tools to use in their careers, and encouraging a further interest in physician leadership. Organizations interested in a customized introduction to leadership development can contact
Katy Sawyer, Institute director, at 804 | 377-1004 to learn more about this opportunity.
