DOC RxRelief accomplishments and updates
September 2011
The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation's (MSVF) medication assistance program, DOC RxRelief: Doctors Optimizing Care through Prescription Relief continues to attract new physician practices. It has increased its service to larger physician groups and health systems over the past year. Since October 2007 when the program began, DOC RxRelief has served more than 1,000 patients and requested over $5 million in medications on their behalf.
The DOC RxRelief program assists physician practices across Virginia to provide their low-income, chronically ill patients without prescription insurance access to the medications they need for free. Using the Virginia Health Care Foundation’s The Pharmacy Connection (TPC) software, MSVF’s DOC RxRelief patient advocate helps patients from a referring practice navigate the often complicated process of applying to Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs). Once an application and information are submitted, the pharmaceutical company sends the prescription to the patient or prescribing practice within eight to ten weeks. Patients may qualify for the program if they:
- Have been diagnosed with a chronic illness
- Have trouble affording prescription medications
- Do not have any type of prescription insurance
- Have a household income that is less than a certain amount depending on the number of people in the family—the patient advocate can help determine income eligibility
