Lisbet M. Hanson, MD
Dr. Hanson, with her physician husband John Kenerson, was a 2009 recipient of the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation’s prestigious Salute to Service Award for the tireless work they have done in Haiti. She was teaching and caring for patients at Paul Farmer’s health center in Haiti when the earthquake occurred and immediately was in the midst of the crisis. She has seen first hand the devastation of the earthquake and its impact on the people of Haiti, and will convey her experiences and her perspectives on the struggle forward.
For the past seven years, she has worked to provide Haitians with needed medical supplies and services, including medicines, hospital facilities, and personnel. Despite the challenging physical and political environment of Haiti, she has achieved great success in creating collaborations which facilitate care. She led the development of an obstetric ultrasound training program for physicians and nurse midwives. In partnership with the Ministry of Public Health, Partners in Health, and her parish, Holy Family, she and her husband John led the development of medical facilities at Baptiste in Central Haiti. Her contributions are significant, extremely effective, and combine individual dedication, with persistent, determined leadership and innovative collaborations.
