MSV, MSVF and MSVPAC elect new leadership

November 2011

The Medical Society of Virginia, (MSV), MSV Foundation (MSVF) and MSV Political Action Committee elected new officers and directors during the MSV Annual Meeting at The Homestead. Hugh M. Bryan III, M.D. was elected as MSV president, Krista Crawford-Mathis, Ph.D., SPHR was elected as MSVF president and Sterling N. Ransone Jr., M.D., FAAFP was elected as MSVPAC chairman.

MSV President
BryanMSV President Hugh M. Bryan III, M.D. is a practicing physician at York River Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Gloucester, Virginia, part of Riverside Medical Group. An active MSV member since 1991, Dr. Bryan has also served as the speaker of the MSV house of delegates, as a member of the MSV board of directors and as president of the Mid-Tidewater Medical Society.

Dr. Bryan received his undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College and his M.D. from Penn State College of Medicine. His post graduate training included the American College of Sports Medicine Team Physician Course and an orthopaedic surgery residency and flexible internship at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, CA. He served his country through military service as assistant chief of orthopaedic surgery at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital in Fort Campbell, KY and at Letterman Army Medical Center.

In addition to membership in his state and local medical societies, Dr. Bryan is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and member of the Virginia Orthohpaedic Society. He also dedicates time to local athletes and recently was installed into the Gloucester High School Sports Hall of Fame for his role as team physician. He is married to MSV member Barbara Allison-Bryan, M.D.

MSVF President 
Crawford-MathisMSVF President Krista Crawford-Mathis, Ph.D., SPHR previously served as vice president, development chair and gala chair of MSVF. She has a background in human resources and is an adjunct instructor at both Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Champlain College.

Dr. Crawford-Mathis completed her undergraduate work at University of Arkansas and received her master’s degree from Radford University. She holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Management from Capella University in Minneapolis, MN.

With a strong commitment to local, regional and global health outreach, Dr. Crawford-Mathis is involved in several professional management and nonprofit organizations, including Peacework Development Fund, Academy of Management, Medical Society of Virginia Alliance and American Academy of Management Alliance. She is married to MSV member John Mathis, M.D.

MSVPAC Chairman 
RansoneSterling N. Ransone Jr., M.D.
was installed as chairman of MSVPAC. Dr. Ransone practices family medicine in Deltaville and serves as an assistant clinical professor of family medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was most recently the MSVPAC vice chairman and MSVPAC finance committee chair.

Dr. Ransone has served MSV as member of the board of directors and chairman of several committees and task forces. He also has served as president and board member of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians and president of the Mid-Tidewater Medical Society, as well as in leadership positions in several other professional organizations.

Dr. Ransone completed his undergraduate work at the College of William and Mary, where he also received a master’s degree in biology. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Dr. Ransone earned the distinction of being a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1998.

Dr. Ransone volunteers his time in a variety of community activities, including as a founding board member and medical director for Hospice Support Services of Middlesex County; medical director of Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad; and as a member of the Virginia Health Reform Initiative’s Technology subcommittee. He is board certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is married to MSV member Karen Ranson, M.D.
