MSVF’s IMPACT program is recognized by three certifying boards
16 May 2011
The American Board of Family Medicine, the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics, the nation’s three largest physician certifying boards, recently announced that the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation’s (MSVF) quality improvement project, Improving Asthma Care and Treatment (IMPACT), was approved for Maintenance of Certification Part IV credit.
The IMPACT program utilizes the
TO GOAL™ quality improvement model to provide asthma quality improvement guidance, support and resources to participating family physicians and their care teams. Although research shows that fewer than 30 percent of physicians examine their own performance data, each certifying board requires physicians to look at their practice and make improvements. MSVF hopes to increase the number of quality improvement projects available to physicians over the next five years and plans to ensure their projects meet the standards outlined by the three boards.
“This joint approval by all three primary care specialty boards provides a tremendous opportunity to spread our asthma improvement program to a wider audience of physician participants and their chronically ill patients,” said
Kurt Elward, M.D., MSVF president and medical director for quality initiatives. “This is exactly the kind of innovative partnership that is needed to better advance quality care in the commonwealth of Virginia.”
