Virginia physicians selected for Physician Leadership Institute

7 August 2008

Richmond—The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation (MSVF) has selected 20 physicians to participate in the 2008-2009 class of the Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute. Now entering its third year, the Institute helps physicians strengthen their leadership abilities and gain the skills necessary to improve health care in Virginia.

"While medical school and residency prepare physicians to provide the best care for their patients, these educational venues do not typically provide the training necessary to serve as adept community, organizational or business leaders," said Beth Bortz, executive director of MSVF. "We believe that the Institute fills a critical gap in state-specific physician education that is not addressed in our medical schools. The program will greatly benefit patients, local communities and the commonwealth."

This yearlong participatory continuing education experience uses a variety of methods to provide physicians with practical leadership training conducted by respected local, state and national speakers. The session topics are specifically focused on physicians and include patient safety and quality of care, community health, public policy and executive management issues. The Institute format includes live workshops, teleconferences, independent learning methods and an innovative Web-based learning platform. Once a participant completes the Institute, an alumni program sustains graduates to provide and facilitate ongoing support for physician leaders as they address real-world leadership challenges.

The Institute was established with a generous five-year grant from the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, which provides support through 2011. In addition, HCA Virginia and the Herndon Foundation are Presidential Sponsors of the Institute.
